Becoming a Governor


If you are thinking about becoming a Parent Governor there is no need to worry about not being specially trained or having previous experience as a Governor.  One of the most common comments from new school Governors is ‘I am not trained, so I am not sure about what to do or how to do it?’

The Department for Education (DfE) has stepped in with lots of training opportunities. They are not compulsory but new Governors who have done the training say they enjoyed them and made friends. Many agreed also with the DfE, that regardless of experience and profession, the training helped them to understand what to look out for as Governors, what affected their schools and how to start carrying out their roles.  Of course the consensus was that they got better with time and practice.

The DfE have in place a National Strategy for Governor Support. They keep Headteachers and Chairs of Governors well informed about programmes, post schedules and toolkits on the DfE website. For more information take a look at the link below:
