Redland Green School

RGS Bristol

Becoming a Governor

We are currently recruiting for new parent governors. Please email the clerk for more details.

The school’s governing board is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and to some degree it financial performance. The board is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The Redland Green School LGB is part of the Gatehouse Green Learning Trust, a multi-academy trust.

As a parent governor, you’ll work with the board to ensure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in ensuring that the board is connected with, and is aware of the views of, parents and the local community

If you are thinking about becoming a Governor there is no need to worry about not being specially trained or having previous experience as a Governor.  One of the most common comments from new school Governors is ‘I am not trained, so I am not sure about what to do or how to do it?’

The Department for Education (DfE) has stepped in with lots of training opportunities. They are not compulsory but new Governors who have done the training say they enjoyed them and made friends. Many agreed also with the DfE, that regardless of experience and profession, the training helped them to understand what to look out for as Governors, what affected their schools and how to start carrying out their roles.  Of course the consensus was that they got better with time and practice.
