HSBC Emerging Schools Rugby Finals

On Saturday 2 May 2009, the Year 7 & 8 rugby teams travelled to Staines Rugby Club, Twickenham, to play in the HSBC Emerging Schools Rugby Finals. The competition is aimed at non-private schools who are developing rugby within a new school.

Both teams played extremely well, having not played since late January and with slightly depleted squads. The Year 7 team played extremely well in their four games. Although they lost each game, there were only ever a couple of scores in it. The seventh and eighth place play off was the closest of these games where a try in extra time snatched away what could have been a hard fought draw. This was a great opportunity for the boys to play rugby against high standard sides, with many lessons learnt for the Year 8 season.

The Year 8 team played with determination and desire but unfortunately lost all three of their group games. By the end of the final game, only 10 players were left standing with three players sustaining bad injuries - a tremendous effort from everyone.

The highlight of the morning was Jason Robinson (England World Cup Winner and Lions) providing a 15 minute coaching session for the Year 8 boys. He gave them some extremely helpful tips to take forward in their rugby careers.

In the afternoon, the boys watched the Army v Navy game at Twickenham which was a great opportunity to see top level rugby at the home of English rugby, with the Army winning 50-9.
