A Fantastic Futures Day for Year 11

At the end of last term Redland Green School held its first Futures Day for our Year 11 students.

This day was specifically developed to help our Year 11 students consider their future academic and careers plans. There were a number of interactive sessions available to students to help develop their awareness of the career marketplace and the skills they need to enter it successfully.

Year 11 Futures Day

Annemeike Waite, Chair of Governors, reported “The whole event was very well organised. As an observer I got to speak with many of the volunteers (parents/carers and representatives from employers in the region), many of whom had given up a significant part of their day to either be interviewed by students, to interview students themselves or to run a stall in the marketplace.  Without exception, they all appreciated being in school, and welcomed the opportunity of being involved.  The vast majority of students I saw took the event seriously, making the most of the opportunities it provided.  Some students had dressed smartly for the occasion – wearing a suit even!  The visitors commented very favourably on the students’ behaviour and about their ability to articulate their views and preferences. Many students had clearly thought about their future choices carefully ahead of the event and I was told their questions were often excellent and at times fairly challenging. Staff members are to be congratulated on the success of the event, there was a real buzz around the school.  It was a really good opportunity for the school to work together with its parent/carer-cohort in providing an important part of the Year 11 preparation for Post-16.”

Year 11 Futures Day

Due to the success of this year’s Futures Day and the positive student and visitor feedback, we hope to run a similar event next academic year. We already know there are a range of people and organisations that would be happy to help to ensure the day is an even bigger success next time.

We would like to thank all the parents and carers that volunteered support, along with the representatives from industry that gave students an opportunity to speak to people from a varied range of careers.
