RGS Bristol

Future Brunels Scheme 2013

Redland Green School has been lucky enough to be one of only three schools in Bristol to take part in an exciting education project in association with the Brunel Institute based at the ss Great Britain.

The Future Brunels Scheme takes three students from Year 7 on a 5-year enrichment programme at the Brunel Institute. The scheme aims to foster and develop the student’s interests in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in an attempt to inspire the students to follow in the footsteps of Isambard Kingdom Brunel himself.

The selected students will spend 1 day per term at the Brunel Institute over the next 5 years. The programme will include learning about scientific method, the role of science in everyday life and the potential for science to find solutions to world problems. The students will also be taken on a science related trip each year, the first of which is planned for Thorpe Park to learn about the science and engineering of roller coasters. The scheme was launched two years ago and we now have five current students (Charlotte G, Fergus P, Harry W, Adam S and Romi A) involved in the scheme. They have thoroughly enjoyed their experience of the scheme so far and have gained valuable skills which they have transferred to their learning at RGS.

If you are interested in being selected to take part is this exciting opportunity please read the selection process in the attached document carefully and ensure you hand in your application letter and consent form to the main office by Tuesday, 9 April 2013.

  1. Initial selection day at RGS

from the application letters/teacher nominations 50 students will be selected to take part in a STEM activity day run by Rolls Royce on Thursday, 18 April 2013. Representatives from the Future Brunels scheme will select 12 students from this day to go onto the next selection stage.
