RGS Bristol

Future Brunels Scheme at the SS Great Britain

Redland Green School has been lucky enough to be chosen as one of only three schools in Bristol to take part in an exciting new education project in association with the ss Great Britain Trust.

The Future Brunels Scheme will take three students from Year 7 on a 5-year enrichment programme at the Brunel Institute based at the ss Great Britain. The scheme aims to foster and develop the student’s interests in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in an attempt to inspire the students to follow in the footsteps of Isambard Kingdom Brunel himself.

The selected students will spend one day per term at the Brunel Institute over the next 5 years. The programme will include learning about scientific method, the role of science in everyday life and the potential for science to find solutions to world problems. The students will also be taken on a science related trip each year, the first of which is planned for Thorpe Park to learn about the science and engineering of roller coasters. The scheme was launched last year and three current Year 8 students are now coming to the end of their first year as Future Brunels. They have thoroughly enjoyed their experience of the scheme so far and have gained valuable skills which they have transferred to their learning at RGS.
