Governors' statement on academy status

January 25th, 2012

As some of you may know, Redland Green School’s Governing Body has, for some time, been considering whether or not it is appropriate for Redland Green to convert to Academy status in order to build on the school’s many successes to date.

After careful monitoring and consideration over almost 12 months, a Governors’ Working Party has now produced a detailed report and recommendation, which was presented and discussed at an extraordinary Full Governing Body meeting last night  (January 24th).

Following that discussion, and with the best interests of the whole school community in mind, a decision was taken to register an interest with the Department for Education in becoming an Academy.

It is important to note that no decision has been taken at this stage in relation to a final decision on whether to convert or not. ‘Registering an interest’ enables the school to access and consider more detailed information and consult all stakeholders on their views – including parents, staff and students – to inform a final decision.

Governors will therefore now initiate a formal period of consultation, remaining wholly committed to ensuring a transparent and open process throughout. Full details of consultation arrangements will be made available to all stakeholders following the next Governing Body meeting on February 7th. There will be a range of opportunities for stakeholders to express their views, including meetings for parents/carers and staff to discuss and understand the issues more fully.

Governors will then have a further decision to make – whether or not formally to apply to become an Academy. It is currently envisaged that this decision will be made by March 30th (tbc), once consultation and any further investigations are completed. The overriding priority will always be to create conditions that will enable RGS students to develop and achieve their full potential.

Further information on the consultation process will also be published shortly.
