Jon Mayhew, Author visits RGS

Jon came to see us on Friday, 29 November and delivered two great workshops to boys in Year 7 and Year 9. The workshops focused on how to create interesting characters and settings within stories and Jon spoke to the students about writing his books, focusing on his new series ‘Monster Odyssey’, the first book of which came out in the summer.  Jon describes this new series as Jules Verne, meets James Bond, meets Percy Jackson!

As part of the workshop students were encouraged to describe characters that Jon put up on the board and build stories around them. This was developed further by the use of ‘story cubes’ where students working collaboratively constructing stories around a range of images. Some fabulous oral stories emerged from this process.

Students had lots of great things to say about the experience:

‘I enjoyed the visit from the author Jon Mayhew as he got us involved with the work and made us get stuck in with his books. He explained his books well but he did this without spoiling the story.’

‘I enjoyed the visit from Jon because [we learnt] many different ways to write great books... I really liked it when we were able to get involved with the activities and try and get ideas for a story. The only thing I didn't enjoy is that it was only 2 hours long!’

‘…when John Mayhew came in to school it was really fun and I hope he makes more books so I can get one for my younger brother’

‘It was good to meet Jon Mayhew, he's really nice. I really enjoyed the story dice, and found them really useful for ideas.’

More information about Jon can be found on his website and Extracts from his books can be read from this site.

All his books are available to borrow from the Learning Resource Centre (see our online catalogue at RGS Google Apps and are widely available through Bristol City Libraries).
