Learning Resource Centre: Book Week 2015

Book Week will be Monday, 2 March – Friday, 6 March

Joss Stirling (who also writes as Julia Golding and Eve Edwards) will be in school on the Monday. Former British diplomat and Oxfam policy adviser, she has now published over thirty books in genres ranging from historical adventure to fantasy. There will be a workshop for a selection of Year 7 students on ‘Myths and Legends’ focusing on her books written as Julia Golding (specifically her book ‘Young Knights of the Round Table’), and a talk for Year 8 girls talking about her books written as Joss Stirling, focusing on ‘Finding Sky’ and her new book ‘Stung’.

All students are welcome to place an order for any of the books. Students involved with the events will be receiving a letter home. For all other students you can pick up an order form from The Vista on Monday, 9 February. Orders need to be received by Wednesday, 11 February. Please hand all orders in at reception’s finance window. Mark them clearly JULIA GOLDING and ‘For the attention of the LRC Manager’. Students who purchase a book will be able to collect signed copies at lunchtime on 2 March from The Vista.

We will of course have copies of all the books featured for loan and they are also available through Bristol Public Library Service.

We endeavour to make sure that all students during their time with us have an opportunity to attend author events. If your son or daughter does not have an opportunity on this occasion please rest assured that they will on another.

Wednesday

In mentor time there will be a literary quiz with prizes for the top three mentor groups.

Thursday is World Book Day and as in previous years we will be having a non-uniform day where students are encouraged to come in dressed as their favourite book character and raise funds for one of the charities that we support.

This year we are raising money for The Hope Foundation (further information on the Foundation can be found in the ‘International’ section of the school website). They are particularly keen to purchase books for science, computing and biology so monies collected on the day will go towards enabling them to do this.

Students coming in in non-uniform/costume will be expected to contribute £1.00, which will be collected during assembly. The assembly on the day will focus on the importance of literacy around the world.

All students will also be given one £1.00 World Book Day Token that can be redeemed as part payment against any book purchase at participating bookshops until the end of March.

Reading Survey

During the week (and the following week) Year 7 will be completing a survey on reading and how they use the Learning Resource Centre. The survey will be rolled out to Year 8 and 9 during next term as well.

Frank Cottrell Boyce @ Redland Green

Later in the month on Wednesday, 25 March we are delighted to be welcoming Frank Cottrell Boyce. Winner of the Carnegie Medal for ‘Millions’ in 2004, and winner in 2012 of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize for ‘The Unforgotten Coat’. He is also equally well known as a screenwriter for numerous TV programmes and films including Doctor Who (‘In the Forest of the Night’). He will be in school talking about his work and promoting his new book ‘The Astounding Broccoli Boy’.
