Netball County Finals, February 2010

Following our success in the Bristol Schools Netball league, the Year 7 and 9 netball teams were selected to take part in the South West netball county finals at the Grange School in Warmley. This competition consisted of the schools that had won their respective leagues from Avon, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset.

The Year 7 team played Priory School in their semi-final. The game was fiercely contested and we finished the first third ahead of Priory by a few goals. Priory pulled ahead in the second and third quarter but RGS did not give up. In the final quarter, following some excellent attacking play, we narrowed the gap. Unfortunately, time was against us and Priory won the game 12-10. The RGS girls went on to play in the third and fourth playoff against Norton Hill and again narrowly missed out on winning by one goal!

The Year 9 team dominated in their semi-final against The Grange School, winning the game convincingly 16-3. The whole team played superbly and ensured the ball was kept in our attacking end for the majority of the game. In the final, RGS made a blazing start by taking a three goal lead in the first few minutes against Priory School. Priory soon settled in to their game and by half time were matching us goal for goal. It was a highly skilful and exciting game and I would say it was some of the best netball I have seen RGS play. Unfortunately, Priory was also an excellent team and the game ended Priory 29 RGS 15.

Congratulations to both teams - it was an excellent day of netball and an honour in itself to reach so far in the competition.
