Parents' Forum Meeting: 18 November

November 2013

Ensuring Redland Green School’s curriculum enables our students to fulfil their potential

Parents of students in all year groups are invited to discuss, share opinions and contribute to a review of our school curriculum.

Context:

The Department for Education recently released details of the reformed national curriculum for schools, for first teaching in September 2014. This national curriculum has been designed to “provide a standard against which academies and free schools can benchmark their curricula, where they choose to develop their own” (DfE, September 2013)

The new national curriculum applies to all subjects for all key stages (including primary schools) with the exception of mathematics, English and science at Key Stage 4. The national curriculum at KS4 for these subjects is still currently under review and is planned to be in place for first teaching in September 2015.

As an academy, we are not obliged to follow the national curriculum although we share the value placed on much of its content and the requirements of schools placed within. We are committed to designing a curriculum that provides opportunities for our students to fulfil or even exceed their potential. Consequently, we are reviewing our current curriculum to ensure it achieves this and does so in a manner that is in keeping with the values of Redland Green School and our wider community.
