Bristol School's Football Final: Match Report

The North Bristol Post 16 team have been crowned champions for a second year running, after an outstanding performance saw them retain the Bristol School’s trophy.

North Bristol dominated from the start playing some excellent football. Downend were tested early on with some good link up play between Edgar and Ben M causing their defence problems. North Bristol continued to dictate the pace of the game and were rewarded for this early pressure. Good work in midfield from Joe H and Max won possession and the ball was played to Edgar who scored with a stunning strike from 20 yards.

Downend tried to exert themselves on the game but a solid back four of Ryan, Joe T, Sam and Mahad ensured that any attack was thwarted. North Bristol were soon pressing again with Ben C running at their left-back, his inside pass found Ryan who made an excellent run into the area and was brought down to earn a penalty. A chance for North Bristol to double their advantage but the keeper saved well from the spot kick.

North Bristol appeared the more settled team, playing some nice one-touch football and making it difficult for Downend to gain control of the ball. This possession was made to count as an attack down the left resulted in our second goal. Mahad picked the ball up in his own half and advanced past two players before feeding the ball to Ellis down the left channel. His cross was not dealt with by the defence and Ben C was on hand to poke the ball home, giving North Bristol a 2-0 lead at the break.

At the start of the second half Downend showed they were eager to get into the game, creating chances to shoot from distance, which were coolly dealt with by John in goal. North Bristol tried to apply the pressure they had in the first half but were caught on the break. A neat pass behind our full-back played in their striker who was tackled by Joe T, but this was judged as a foul and Downend were awarded a penalty, which was converted by their captain to make the score 2-1.

It was important that we remained calm and played our possession football to keep control of the game. The midfield struggled to have an influence as the ball was being played over them straight to Downend forwards. Strong defending from Sam and Joe T denied any aerial threat, and with Mahad and Miles preventing opportunities down both flanks North Bristol gradually began to play more football in their opponents half. Another well timed run from Ben M saw him through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to be brought down just outside the area. The referee had no choice but to show red card, leaving Downend with 10 men and North Bristol a free-kick in a dangerous area. Edgar stepped up and sent the ball curling into the corner leaving the replacement keeper no chance. The score line now stood at 3-1.

Steve replaced Ben C on the wing and he had an immediate impact, dribbling at their defence and looking to play in our forwards through the middle. Our midfield was now in full control of the game, reverting back to one-touch passing and picking out our attackers with ease. The pace and movement of our players was proving too much and we were rewarded with another free-kick on the right-hand side of the penalty area. Steve’s cross was whipped in low with plenty of pace, and Edgar made an excellent run across his defender flicking the ball home to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1.

Remi was then brought on to the left-wing with Ellis moving into central midfield. North Bristol’s defence were becoming less needed as Downend were continually pinned in their own half. Joe H was stopping anything being played through to the opposition’s strikers and after another successful interception he played to Ellis who drilled the ball past the keeper from 25 yards.

Ben M continued to cause problems up front and was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet. Edgar turned his man and raced through the middle, squaring the ball to Ben M only for him to be tackled at the last moment. From the resultant corner Downend cleared but North Bristol were relentless in the pressure they applied. Remi and Mahad were experiencing continued success down the left-hand side.

Downend now played with three strikers but Joe T, Sam and Miles were blocking any attempt at goal. As the game moved closer to the final whistle there was still time for one last goal. North Bristol exposed gaps in the opposition defence and Edgar was soon through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, calmly rounding him and shooting into an empty net. This took his goal tally to 4, and gave North Bristol an impressive 6-1 victory over their rivals.

Congratulations to the whole squad who fully deserved to be crowned champions for a second year running. Throughout the season the team have played some exceptional football and have been rewarded for their efforts by retaining the Bristol and South Glos. School's Trophy.

On a final note, Ben M was voted as the Players’ Player of the Season.
