Ski Austria 2014

We departed school on Friday, 14 February on the 20-hour coach journey to Austria. We were lucky with the weather and although the coach was being blown down the motorway we made our ferry crossing from Dover before the gale force winds made the Channel too rough to cross. We arrived in Worgl, Austria and checked into our traditional family run hotel before heading to ski hire to fit our boots, skis and snowboards. Then we were ready to hit the slopes!

Mr Evans woke the group at 6.45am each morning for a 7.00am breakfast. It meant an early start but it ensured we left the hotel by 8.00am and were in the gondola at 9.00am, beating all the queues. We had three ability ski groups and a snowboarding group. All of the groups made huge progress and all but the beginners skied and boarded a black slope by the end of the week!

The week is always eventful and the highs and lows of skiing are celebrated in each evening’s ‘smarty pants’ and ‘doofus’ awards. After dinner and awards it was off to our evening entertainment. We bowled, swam and competed against other schools at the traditional Tyrolean evening. At the Tyrolean we are encouraged to sing and dance to traditional Austrian music. The students play games such as log sawing, nail hammering and cow milking! The students were fantastic and really embraced each competition but we will never forget how the Year 12 boys snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the team ski race!!

On the final few days the sun shone and the groups skied the mountains with the top groups travelling from valley to valley. On the final evening each student received a snowsport award and level from their Ski Astons instructor.

The trip was a fantastic success and the students were a real credit to themselves, their families and the School. The Year 13s made a fitting and emotional speech as we arrived back to school. All of the talk then was how they can persuade their parents to let them go on next year’s trip!

Details of next February’s trip we be out shortly and will be run by Mr Evans. The trip is open to all students and is a great experience for advanced and novice skiers and snowboarders.
