Bristol Schools Finals

We have had a fantastic Hockey, Football and Basketball season this year. Last term, the girls were crowned North Bristol League winners in the following:

After being so successful in the North Bristol leagues and tournaments, the girls trained hard in preparation for the Bristol School Finals. On the day, hopes were high to be crowned Bristol school champions and then have the chance to become County champions.

Year 7 Hockey Bristol Schools 'Runners up'

The first finals Hockey match was against Ashton Park. RGS started confidently, having the majority of the possession and applying pressure on Ashton Park's defensive backline. Ella, Harriet K and Harriet D worked extremely hard in midfield switching the play and threading passes through to Sunniegh, who managed to score a super goal. After the first goal, the nerve of the RGS squad decreased and the girls managed to score many more goals.

The second of the Finals was against Colston's Girls School, who are very strong and had previously beaten all the teams in the central league. RGS were right to expect a tough match. The girls played some excellent Hockey but could not convert the pressure into a goal. Then, in the final few minutes, Colston's scored. The girls were disappointed as this goal was completely against the run of play. The final finished 1-0 to Colston's Girls School. Nevertheless, the girls should be pleased with their performance in the finals and will look forward to next years' competition.

Year 7 Hockey Team: Harriet K, Harriet D, Ella, Annie (GK), Eloise, Sunniegh, Emma, Francesca and Evie.

Year 7 Football Bristol Schools Champions

The RGS football girls got off to a great start with a 4-0 win in their semi-final against City Academy. The final was a rematch from a festival earlier in the year against St Bede's. The girls were a little apprehensive as on that occasion St Bede's came away the winners. Also, St Bede's entered the game on a high following their 9 v 0 semi final win. It was an extremely close game with both teams having several shots on goal. Excellent goal keeping from Emma prevented St Bede's from hitting the target. Redland Green only needed one shot on goal to score and came away victorious.

Year 7 Football Team: Isobel, Alice, Emma, Juliet, Francesca, Erin, Sunniegh and Livvie.

Year 8/9 Hockey Bristol Schools 'Champions'

After a season with repeated victory, the 8/9 team entered the finals unbeaten in the North Bristol League. The team also played against several private schools during the season, winning against Redland High and Clifton High.

The first Hockey final was against St Mary Redcliffe School (SMRT). RGS started confidently, having the majority of the possession and applying pressure on SMRT's defensive backline. However, nerves seemed to be getting in the way of converting the pressure into a goal. RGS worked hard and won several penalty short corners from smart strategic play in the penalty 'D' by Megan. Eventually the deadlock was broken. Hannah and Kate worked extremely hard to break down play, turn over possession. Rose and Lizzie did well to move the ball on quickly to our forwards Ella and Rebecca. The first game finished 1-0.

Soon after the first victory, RGS were faced with their second final against Cotham. RGS needed to win this match to keep their status as the Best Hockey Team in Bristol. The whole team were focused and knew what was at stake. In the first half, RGS played well. All players worked collaboratively to effectively transfer the ball across the pitch enabling them to attack the 'D' from both right and left side. It was not before long before we scored and then added a second. The final whistle went at 2-1 and all celebrated as the girls had been crowned champions for the second year running. Well done girls!

Year 8/9 Hockey Team: Polly, Rebecca, Hannah, Anna, Sarah, Rose, Becky, Gemma, Kate, Ella, Megan, Ruth, Lizzie, Molly and Raphie.

Year 8/9 Football Final - Bristol Schools 'Runners up'

The Year 8/9 football team had tough opposition in miserable conditions in their semi-final against St Bernadette but came away with a 2-1 win to progress to the final. In the final we were up against Bridge Learning Campus (BLC). Becky distributed the ball superbly down the wings to our attacking players. Alice was kept on her toes with several excellent attempts at goal from the opposition and made some superb saves. Our defensive line held off the attack for the majority of the first half but unfortunately BLC proved to be the stronger team and won the game 3-0.

Year 8/9 Football Team: Rebecca, Sarah, Hannah, Leila, Ruth, Isabelle, Poppy, Yana, Isobel, Alice, Ella, Nicole, Evie, Sophie.

Year 10 Hockey Finals - Bristol School Champions

The Year 10 Hockey squad has made outstanding progress this season. Again, they have played many private schools and came away as winners in some fixtures.

In the state school league the RGS Year 10 had to play against mainly Year 11 teams due to the league structure; some may think that the girls would be at a disadvantage, however the fantastic results say otherwise.

The first of the finals matches was against Cotham. The Cotham team consisted of mainly Year 11s and so the girls expected a highly contested match. After the push back, the girls took a while to settle to nerves and build momentum going forward. About half way though the first half the girls started to play some excellent hockey. Sarah, Jasmine and Hauke passed the ball confidently ensuring that RGS kept possession and applied pressure. Dominique and Louise used their sound dribbling skills to beat players when attacking the 'D'. Defensively, Emily (GK) and Madeline were solid denying any threat from the opposition. Towards the end of the first half, the team's possession and patience was converted into celebration when Sarah and Jasmine converted two stunning goals between them. In the second half, RGS were sound defensively with Bea, Anna and Katherine moving the ball forward at every opportunity which mounted more pressure on Cotham.

Soon after the first victory, RGS were faced with their second final against St Mary Redcliffe Temple (SMRT). Unfortunately for SMRT, our Year 10 team continued with intensity that they finished the last match against Cotham. It was within seconds that Louise scored the first goal. Superb support play by the midfield provided quality delivery to our forwards; Louise was on top form and went on to score four more goals. Redland Green became Bristol school champions with two wins and 10 goals scored. Congratulations Ladies!

Year 10 Hockey Team: Bea, Louise, Sarah, Julia, Esme, Emily (GK), Anna, Victoria, Jasmine, Hayley, Dominique, Georgia, Kathryn, Madeline, Georgia and Hauke.

Year 7, 8/9 and 10 Basketball Teams

Finally, congratulations to all the girls involved in the Basketball League fixtures. Year 7 Basketball team were 'runners up' in the Bristol schools tournament. Year 8/9 were placed first in the Bristol Schools 'Top League' Basketball League. The Year 10 girls again played some excellent Basketball against teams consisting of largely Year 11s and did extremely well to be placed third in the Bristol Schools 'Top League'.

Hockey County Trials

Congratulations to the following girls who were successful at the Avon Hockey trials. The Avon Hockey trials are always highly contested; the majority of the candidates coming from private schools and over 60 competing for a place in the county squad (in each age category).
