Strictly Balti

On Thursday, 3 December, 150 students were given the opportunity to see the one man show, Stricty Balti. The show, commissioned by the Travelling Light Theatre Company, was written and performed by Saikat Ahamed.

Saikat arrived with a simple floor cloth, a sound system and a set of 4 boxes. Some students were intrigued and puzzled that there was no set, no costumes and no lighting. It became apparent as the play unravelled that these things were not essential. Saikat skilfully transported us from the main hall at RGS all the way back to his primary school in Birmingham, then to his teenage self meeting his family in Bangladesh. Playing every character he encountered from his ballroom dancing teacher to his eccentric relatives we were taken on a journey full of energy, joy, sadness and hysteria at times!  This hugely entertaining but also moving and thought provoking piece gave us a real insight into our own feelings of insecurity growing up and how important our sense of belonging and "fitting in" is whatever our circumstances.

On behalf of our students, the Drama department would like to say a very big thank you to Saikat and The Travelling Light Theatre Company for giving us the opportunity to experience this fantastic show.
