Year 11 ICT Students become Web Designers...

Year 11 ICT students are working on a project to build a website using Dreamweaver.  They have taught themselves the web design languages HTML* and CCS** using online tutorials and a mixture of trial and error.

The project had to be treated as if the students were a commercial web designer. So each student had to find a ‘client’ to create a website for. For example, a holiday cottage, a cake designer, an engineering company and an artist were some of the clients the students ‘worked for’. While some of these were family or family friends, others were businesses that the students had approached following their own research.

The process that they went through was to spend some time researching the clients’ needs in terms of what the website was required to do, what text and pictures it needed and how the client wanted the website to look and feel. Then they started building it using HTML and CCS.

The students have been working really hard on their websites and are nearly set to go ‘live’ with them.

The Students’ Perspective

The best thing about this project:

“Learning about what you can do and the limits of the programmes that we use.”

Vanessa Jones

“Seeing and understanding all the work that goes into making a website from scratch.”

Nick Walker

“It has been interesting to find out how a website is made after using them so much.”

Adam Young

“It's great to see your website come alive after you edit it and develop it!”

Alfie Ward

“Seeing how a website is built and changing it and the smallest details. So you’ve made it all! It is really satisfying. There are no limits to it. I used tutorials and experimentation to see what works. And bits of code from other websites. It was really interesting. For example, I found interesting ways to do a photo gallery from another website.”

Angus Simmonds

A special mention must go to a number of students who created snow for their websites as a special winter feature! Take a look at the video below, which shows snow falling across a couple of the students websites!
